Resonance Pro: focus through physical modeling

Following the age old principle that if it doesn't exist, build it (which is, of course, the first principle of creative writing), Resonance Pro is the natural successor to Novelis.

When I was writing my earlier novels, I often used quiet background music mixed with café ambience and varying levels of ambient noise. I even released a video showing the exact sound setup so others could use it, too. However, after conversations with Tensing Rimpoche, a modern monastic Buddhist monk who shares my deep interest in meditation and neural states, it became obvious that we could push the concept much further.

Novelis arose from an absence of a horizontally scrolling word processor. In that same spirit, Tensing and I decided to engineer a dedicated, flow state inducing soundscape. Over the past six months, we've built an ambient soundscape generator that delivers an ideal environment for creative writing and focus.

The core of Resonance Pro lies in brainwave entrainment, a concept Tensing and I have been interested in, particularly Robert Monroe’s explorations of Hemi-Sync. Brainwave entrainment works by encouraging the brain’s electrical activity to follow an external rhythmic stimulus, often leading to more synchronized activity between the cerebral hemispheres. When one ear hears a specific tone and the other ear hears a slightly different tone, the beat doesn’t actually exist in the audio itself. Instead, the brain constructs a perceptual beat equal to the difference between the two tones, primarily through processing in the brainstem’s superior olivary complex. This binaural beat can then drive a frequency-following response, promoting more coherent, whole-brain wave patterns, being a state Monroe called hemispheric synchronization.

By altering these frequency differences over time, specific brainwave states, such as deep meditation, intense focus or restful sleep can be induced. As time passes, the frequencies gradually shift, gently guiding the brain into a target mental state.

Unlike traditional audio apps, Resonance Pro uses no pre-recorded audio files. Every soundscape is generated entirely digitally in real time. This keeps the software footprint exceptionally small while allowing for near infinite versatility.

To maximize the affect of the entrainment frequencies, they are carved out parametrically within the overall sound mix. This ensures that when you activate a preset, entrainment tones remain fully effective and never muffled or attenuated by surrounding ambient layers.

Resonance Pro features four distinct sound engines that can be toggled on or off based on environment and task: Hemi-Sync entrainment tones, a noise bed, nature sounds and generative music.

There is total control over the mix. If a setup focused purely on entrainment is desired, run the Hemi-Sync engine and the noise bed with no musical or nature elements. Alternatively, turn off the Hemi-Sync entirely and write to a gentle blend of ambient music and soft static.

To prevent neural habituation, where the brain tunes out repeating audio patterns over long sessions, Resonance Pro includes a dynamic randomizer and timer effect. The randomizer subtly evolves the active preset over time to keep the audio fresh with soft, seamless transitions while focus can remain on whatever task is being undertaken.

Whether you need to sink into a deep writing session, meditate or simply shut off your brain at the end of the day, Resonance Pro was developed to help get you there gently. Tensing and I have made the application completely free for anyone looking to support their creative pursuits or study, rest or meditation. And yes, vast swathes of dark humor political eco thriller Wasted is being written to it.

Try Resonance Pro today and change the way you work, rest and create.
